Region · eastern North Carolina, from Raleigh and the Triangle to the coast, NC

Porsche Club of America, Hurricane Region

The Hurricane Region of the Porsche Club of America covers eastern North Carolina from Raleigh to the coast. Its Saturday Kaffeeklatsch at Brier Creek, Cary dinner social, Spring Charity Concours, Oktoberfest, BBQ runs and the Wirbelsturm newsletter.

The area Hurricane covers

The region’s history page dates Hurricane to 1995, when the Carolinas Region, then covering all of North Carolina and part of South Carolina, was judged too large to serve members to the east. PCA drew the dividing line roughly from Roxboro in the north to Rockingham in the south. Zone 3 representative Dave Lumpkin delivered the charter on 19 September 1995 at a ceremony at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Raleigh.

The first boundary also took in part of the northern South Carolina coast, and those counties moved to the Palmetto Region in two phases, in 2009 and 2011. Today Hurricane covers all or part of 53 North Carolina counties east of the line and has more than 1,200 primary members, per the same page. The PCA region finder returns Hurricane for downtown Raleigh and Cary, while Durham and Chapel Hill ZIP codes go to the Carolinas Region.

Weekly and monthly meets

The fixed point is the Saturday Kaffeeklatsch at Jason’s Deli in the Brier Creek Shopping Center, 8am to 10am, which the Join PCA page opens to anyone thinking of joining. The history page adds Saturday morning gatherings in New Bern and Wilmington for members nearer the coast.

The Monthly Social is a dinner on the second Tuesday at the Mellow Mushroom at 4300 NW Cary Parkway in Cary, which the social page recommends to people new to the region. The region also holds a monthly brunch in New Bern and a monthly breakfast at the coast, and the same page asks members to suggest another Triangle meeting place.

Shows, parties and drives

Two shine-and-show events anchor the year, per the concours page. The Spring Charity Concours rotates each year between Leith Porsche and Porsche of Southpoint and benefits Duke Children’s Hospital. Oktoberfest is held each fall at Montague’s Picnic Grounds in Cary, with proceeds going to a rotating list of local charities that has included Wake County Guardian ad Litem, Hope Reins and the Fisher House at Fort Bragg. Winners at both are chosen by people’s choice voting rather than national concours judging, and the page suggests volunteering at them as a way for new members to meet people.

The Holiday Party is usually held in January at a venue in the Triangle, moving to the Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach area every few years. Each fall, member Brian Tucker hosts the region’s wine tasting at his home in Chapel Hill. Past outings listed on the social page include the USS North Carolina and the Carolina Tiger Rescue.

Tours run as day drives or multi-day trips, with any charge set only to cover expenses, and the site carries guides for members who want to lead one. Its driving routes page shares GPX files for routes the region has used: BBQ runs from Cary to Pik N Pig and to Redneck BBQ Lab in Smithfield, a run from Pittsboro through the Uwharrie, and fall mountain legs from Little Switzerland to Morganton and on to Lake James.

Hurricane does not run its own track days. Its HPDE chair keeps members posted on events run by the Carolinas and First Settlers regions at Virginia International Raceway and Carolina Motorsports Park.

The newsletter is Wirbelsturm. The newsletter page calls it quarterly and the home page calls it bimonthly. Under editor Darrell Bryant it placed in PCA’s national newsletter contest in 2018 through 2023 and again in 2025, per the Legendary Members page, and the region’s website took second place in its class for Website of the Year in 2020.

New members

A member’s first Hurricane name badge is free, shipping included, ordered through the region’s online store after registering with the name on the PCA membership card. People still shopping for a Porsche are pointed to PCA’s Test Drive program. For national dues and the application itself, see the Porsche Club of America page.
