A monthly payment is the number every car is shopped on, and it is one line out of five. The other four arrive whether or not the car is financed, they are largely fixed once the car is chosen, and together they are close to a payment in their own right. Every figure below is a published national average, named and dated, with the arithmetic shown.
Insurance: $119.87 a month
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners publishes the average combined premium actually written in each state. In the 2023 database, released in June 2025, the national average works out to $119.87 a month, or $1,438.44 a year.
That is an average across every driver and every vehicle, which makes it a decent planning figure and a poor personal one. Two things move it hard. The first is the state: the same database puts Texas at $143.91 a month, $288.48 a year above the national figure. The second is the car, covered further down.
Fuel: $146.72 a month, at 25 mpg
Two numbers make this one. The Federal Highway Administration's Table VM-1 puts average travel at 10,812 miles per vehicle per year. The Energy Information Administration's weekly series had US regular at $4.071 a gallon at the end of August 2026.
Fuel economy is the assumption, and it is the reader's to supply rather than a source's. At 25 mpg, 10,812 miles is 432.5 gallons, $1,760.63 a year, $146.72 a month. At 20 mpg it is $183.40 a month. At 18, which is a fair figure for a large V8, it is $203.78. At 30 it is $122.27.
The spread between an 18 mpg car and a 30 mpg one is $81.51 a month on average mileage. That is a real number and it is smaller than most people expect, which matters in both directions: it is not a reason to buy the boring car, and it is not nothing.
Maintenance: $99.47 a month
AAA's Your Driving Costs 2025 puts maintenance, repair and tyres at $99.47 a month for a mainstream vehicle, with a working range of $74.60 to $124.34. It is an average over the life of a car rather than a bill that arrives every month, which is exactly why it belongs in a monthly figure: the year with four tyres and a brake job is paid for by the three years before it.
Registration: $18.88 a month
The same AAA study, net of purchase tax, gives $226.59 a year for licence and registration, which is $18.88 a month. This is the smallest of the four and the one that varies least with the car.
The total

Insurance $119.87, fuel $146.72, maintenance $99.47, registration $18.88. That is $384.94 a month. A car with a $500 payment costs $884.94 a month to keep on the road.
The useful way to read that is backwards. A budget of $900 a month for a car is not a $900 payment; on these averages it is closer to a $515 payment. Anyone shopping to a payment without the other four lines in front of them is shopping to a number that is roughly 43 percent short.
What to do with it
Get the insurance quote before signing anything. It is the only one of the four that can be known exactly, in advance, for the specific car, in ten minutes, and it is the one that varies most between two cars that cost the same.
Then take the fuel line seriously enough to use your own mileage rather than the national one. Somebody driving 4,000 miles a year and somebody driving 22,000 are not looking at the same car, whatever the sticker says.
